They are generated using a hashing function and a username as a seed. Despite the grid being 5x5, they are always symmetrical, so the grid is actually 3x5 with column 4 being the same as column 2 and column 5 being the same as column 1.</p>\n<p>A 3x5 grid has only 15 squares, and a square is either on or off. It dawned on me one day that the total number of permutations isn't actually <em>that</em> large. 2^15 = 32,768.</p>\n<p>As a hobbyist generative artist, this screamed <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_multiple\">small multiples</a> to me.</p>\n<h2>Generating an avatar</h2>\n<p>An avatar can be thought of as a 15 digit binary number, where each bit represents one of the fifteen squares in the 3x5 grid. Then the first two columns are reflected across the middle column.</p>\n<div class=\"gatsby-highlight\" data-language=\"text\"><pre class=\"language-text\"><code class=\"language-text\">avatar = 100 all the avatars is as simple as iterating over all the binary values between <code class=\"language-text\">000 000 000 000 000</code> and <code class=\"language-text\">111 111 111 111 111</code>. Since binary is just a base 2 number, we can instead think of these seeds as base 10 numbers.
